Duel for the Golan: The 100-Hour Battle That Saved Israel
Published in Paperback by Pacifica Military History (December, 1987)
Authors: Jerry Asher and Eric M. Hammel
Average review score:

Excellent study of often ignored battle during 1973 war.
Little is heard about the fighting on the Golan Heights between Israeli & Syrian forces during the Yom Kippur war, but those familiar with the terrain & environs of the Golan Heights & the Galilee region as a whole, can have little doubt as to the difficulties facing the combatants on both sides and the very harshness of the campaign.

This excellent book is about the conflict here during the 1973 war, where the Syrian Army massed on the Golan Heights, attempted to strike in a lighting offensive drive towards the Mediterranean Sea, thereby cutting Israel in two during the most Holy period in the Jewish calendar, with the Israeli military at it's most vulnerable.

This outstanding study details the make-up of the Syrian forces which consisted of a vast amount of new Soviet equipment/weaponry & comprising of some 1,200 main battle tanks, 1,000 armoured personnel carriers & some 1,000 artillery pieces, not to mention the vast numbers of infantry.

The book presents a number of interviews taken over a five year period from participants of both sides during the fighting and covers one of the greatest tank battles fought anywhere since World War 2, even detailing many 'intimate' accounts of 'tank against tank' battles during the combat.

We are provided with remarkable accounts of incredible courage and an analysis of how an inferior number of Israeli troops inflicted one of the greatest defeats in military history upon considerably greater Arab armoured forces. Notably, every single Israeli tank engaged in combat, being numerically inferior, was hit by hostile fire.

An exploration is provided into how the end of this conflict resulted in the Syrian Army being virtually destroyed in the field (including largely ignored or forgotten Iraqi & Jordanian contingents) and with Israeli artillery within range of striking Damascus, the Syrian capital.

A highly recommended, excellent account of yet another pivotal battle in this turbulent region.

Excellent Introductory Work
This is an excellent book for those wanting a good introduction to epigraphy and palaeography in ancient Semitic languages, especially Northwest Semitic languages (eg, Aramaic, Phoenician, Hebrew). It contains a wealth of information gleaned from a vast array of inscriptions and ancient texts, all compiled into a simple format. A most enjoyable and informative book!

Early Islamic Conquests (Princeton Studies on the Near East)
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (June, 1986)
Author: Fred McGraw Donner
Average review score:

An excellent overview of its subject
This book was an excellent study of the subject, and is a good "base work" for anyone studying it. Sometimes the writing tends to repeat itself, but the sheer complexity of the argument may make this a positive. Good portrayal of the historical setting.

East Africa Handbook: With Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia
Published in Hardcover by Footprint Handbooks (January, 1998)
Author: Michael Hodd
Average review score:

Best East Africa Travel Guide
I am planning a trip to Africa and have scoured many bookstores and shelves for THE BOOK. Footprints provides a wonderful book for those who really want to know EVERYTHING in preparation for their trip--from tipping guides to safari ratings to hotel guides to crime and embassy information--ad infinitim. This book is wealth of practical information and provides maps, history, culture and language information and even has a built in glossy color wildlife section on the flora and fauna one will encounter whilst in East Africa. Having a comprehensive guide in a small package (~6x4 in) is essential since travellers are limited to backage weight restrictions. (Books taken are thusly limited). This book will provides excellent reading material (as well as a travel resource) for all things East African before, during and after travel. Restaurants and hotels are rated by $ and quality, as are safari companies. Each page is double columned in small print, absolutely LOADED with essential information. The version offered for 1999 has a hardbinding, which is a plus. Unfortuantely, all post-1999 Footprint editions are now softcover. If you can take only one book, this is it. This one will be one of two books in my bag. The other one will be Hemingway's 'Green Hills of Africa.'

East Africa: An Evolving Landscape
Published in Hardcover by Thames & Hudson (July, 1988)
Authors: Tim Beddow and Dominic Sasse
Average review score:

The best "coffee table" book on East Africa
This is by far the best "coffee table" book on East Africa. The pictures are one of the best I have seen on the region and I should know for I have lived here for 37 years. The pictures encompass a whole spectrum of landscapes, peoples etc, taken without any journalistic prejudice or bias which otherwise most foreigners cannot seem to shake off - lending their views in their pictures. The narration is also very simplistic and on an "as is" basis. I am fed up of reading about and seeing Africa from a foreigner's point of view who tends to spend a few weeks or months in a place and feels best qualified to compile a tome about the subject. Just because these foreigners have easier access to the international publishing houses, their egos are forced on the general public in the form of expensive books.

Tim Beddow on the other hand has managed to capture East Africa at its best and lets the reader form his/her own opinion on the region. It is a pity that I have given away my copy as a present to an Africa-lover who left the country as I cannot get my hands on another one in Kenya!

East and West: Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science
Published in Paperback by Robert Briggs Assoc (July, 1986)
Author: Stanislav Grof
Average review score:

Are We There Yet?
Famed LSD Psychotherapist Stanislav Grof gives this lecture in written form in 1983 at the Seventh International Transpersonal Conference in Bombay, India. Although only 25 pages long, Grof gives a concise, yet dense history of Western Science. Explaining the cross-overs into other branches of study, for instance Freud's theories are based on Newtonian-Cartesian physics, in which people have drives that have cause and effect. Well "written," and for the most part for the layman, however, there are some prerequisites of knowledge in order to grasp it in its entirety. This book, for me, gave me a great and new understanding of what Einsteins theory of relativity means to our culture: that our way of thinking as a culture changes from A to B, to the instantaneous now A and B. If there were to be any arguments made, it would not be on this lecture in partiular, but many who writes about Western science "against" Eastern wisdom, is that it always seems that the West is trying to get to the East and not vice verse, which, really the idea they begin with is to meet in the middle. A good read overall, and highly reccomended. A good book to read with this is Alan Watt's "The Book."

East Asia : China, Japan, and Korea (Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, Volume 7)

Fantastic resource
This is a very informative collection of articles covering many aspects of South Asian music. It includes articles about North and South Indian classical traditions, folk traditions, dance, and popular music. There are also many articles about the role of music in society, women in music in South Asia, and South Asian music worldwide. Each region of South Asia is also covered with individual chapters. Many of the musical concepts and structures are exemplified in the accompanying CD; the relevant CD tracks are clearly noted in the text.

Living in Dubai, I have found myself immersed in South Asian culture, and recently started studying carnatic music on the veena, simply because it was here. Lacking all knowledge of the contexts in which the veena is played, I found myself floundering in my studies. The first teachers I worked with here either haven't had enough English or enough music theory studies to explain the music. I searched on the Net for information about carnatic music, but found that most of the information was written by Indians for Indians, using terms that I don't understand or can't make sense of. What makes this book different is that it is written for Western audiences, and the Indian terms are fully explained. As a result, this book has been a tremendous resource for me in explaining the music theory that I was struggling with, as well as the context of the music in Indian society. I've never read an encyclopedia cover to cover before, but once I got started reading this one, I couldn't stop.

East Asian Democratization : Impact of Globalization, Culture, and Economy
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (September, 2000)
Author: Robert W. Compton
Average review score:

Refreshing and Helpful Research
"It is refreshing to come across a book on East Asia that at once captures the complexity of its political systems and presents a useful model for understanding them. Compton's model explains the ways in which political elites in Japan, Korea, and Thailand have sought, first and foremost, to preserve social order and good government while developing their economies to be competitive internationally. Compton has identified the relevant variables for understanding this complex set of circumstances, put the variables together in a coherent, theoretically challenging model, and developed a set of quantitative indicators and case studies to test the efficacy of the model. The result is a book that will be extremely helpful to scholars and graduate students trying to advance the research agenda on East Asian politics." East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg "The Hour Was One of Horror"
Published in Paperback by Thomas Publications (January, 1998)
Author: John M. Archer
Average review score:

Everything It promises it delivers
This is an excellent book providing rich, orderly detailed narratives (i.e. easy to read), old & new photos to aid your tour and good graphic/maps. It cites quotations of battle participants in the context of the markers and photos. The author has done a very fine, interesting job in 90 pages. The book/guide is billed by the Tourist bureau net web site as a must read, and it is. It delivers. I'd suggest that this guide would be most appreciated by "return visitors" to the park, but first timers spending more than one day at the park could clearly get some very good value out of this finely detailed book also. I would further suggest that if one obtained the paperback gettysburg "Souvenir Guide to the National Military Park" (Gross & Collins) along with the Archer book they could greatly enrich their tour quality and efficiency. Hats off to John Archer, great work.
